Ten high school juniors served by Blue Grass Energy joined 147 students for the Kentucky Rural Electric Frankfort Youth Tour in April. The group spent the day touring the state capital and learning about government.
Blue Grass Energy sends 10 students to the nation’s capital for the Washington Youth Tour each June. Their educational journey begins in Frankfort for a look at the state’s government system.
“We’re committed to the communities we serve,” said Blue Grass Energy’s Vice President of Member Services and Economic Development Cathryn W. Gibson. “A first-hand experience in Frankfort and Washington enhances the students’ understanding of our government, and possibly inspires them to become our future leaders.”
In Frankfort, the students toured the Governor’s Mansion, the Kentucky Vietnam Memorial, the Capitol Building and met government officials, including the governor of Kentucky, the Honorable Steve Beshear.
“My favorite part of the Frankfort trip was probably meeting Gov. Steve Beshear,” said participant Suzanne Lilly of Lawrenceburg, Ky. “It was a great opportunity to personally ask him questions and hear his opinion of what is important to students.”
Blue Grass Energy’s 2012 Youth Tour representatives are Joseph Bush of Cynthiana, Kareem Omar of Nicholasville, Kayla Newland of Richmond, Ronnie Sams of Frankfort, Alyssa Meece of Frankfort, Meredith O’Dell of Richmond, Alyssa Campbell of Cynthiana, Morgan Howard of Cynthiana, Suzanne Lilly of Lawrenceburg and Anna-Marie Hyatt of Lawrenceburg.
