Environmental Education

Through East Kentucky Power and Touchstone Energy®, Blue Grass Energy offers a number of environmental education programs designed to inform children of all ages and teachers about Kentucky's natural wonders.

The Reptiles and Amphibians of Kentucky

This program for fourth-graders is our most popular -- and because the kids get to handle the animals themselves, it's not hard to see why. First, they hear a 20-minute slide presentation, and then they get to see and touch frogs, salamanders and snakes. We don't bring poisonous snakes unless requested.

The purpose of this program is to teach the physiological differences between reptiles and amphibians and their niche in Kentucky's environment. Every student receives a poster of the frogs of Kentucky.

The Rare Wildflowers of Kentucky

A program geared to middle school and high school students, this 30-minute slide presentation highlights many of Kentucky's listed botanical species. Included in the program is a discussion of threatened prairies, barrens and wetland species. Every student receives a poster of the orchids of Kentucky.

Bats of Kentucky

Students will learn the truth about bats and their role in cave ecology from a 30-minute slide presentation highlighting many of Kentucky's bats, including the endangered Indiana Bat and Virginia Big-Eared Bat. Our biologists also use mist nets and Beanie Baby bats to demonstrate how we collect and study these incredible creatures.

Contact Cindy McFarland to schedule a visit to your school. These programs are provided as a free community service by Blue Grass Energy and Touchstone Energy.
