2012 Washington Youth Tour: What are you waiting for?

January 17, 2012

What makes Blue Grass Energy different from other utilities? Its commitment to community – and that includes high school students.

Each year, Blue Grass Energy sends 10 high school juniors to Washington, D.C., for the Electric Cooperative WashingtonYouth Tour.

"Blue Grass Energy has been sponsoring the Washington Youth Tour since 1983, “says Cathryn Gibson, Blue Grass Energy vice president of marketing & communication. “This is an excellent program that has been around a long time, and it simply gets better every year.

“We really want high school juniors to apply for this program. Our staff visits most of the high schools in our service area and sends Washington Youth Tour materials to more than 40 high schools where we may touch Blue Grass Energy students. We sponsor only Blue Grass Energy students and we strive to get the information to as many as we can through as many venues as possible.

Selected participants spend one week in June touring the Smithsonian Institution, Arlington National Cemetery, the Library of Congress, the U.S. Capitol, the Kennedy Center and the White House. They meet Kentucky’s legislators in Congress and learn about electric cooperatives’ role in national government.
